This is a brand new blog I’ll be writing, certainly for a few months anyway as we live our lives in this crazy lock down. Ask Sheldon Anything will be a weekly blog trying to answer your music questions. These could be anything from what chords can I play in a particular key to deep theory questions about modes and chord structure. You may even want to just ask me about some good music to listen to improve your ear training. So here goes…..
Major chord variations
Sheldon, What are some common chord variations for the Major chord? Joe from Dorset
Thanks Joe for your question. Well it does depend upon whether we’re talking about a one chord, four chord or 5 chord. So let me break down a few nice variations for each
The One Chord Major Variations
- Sus 2
- Sus 4
- 6 9
The Four Chord
- 6 9
- Power chord
The Five Chord
- 6 9
As you can see there’s quite a few basic variations you can do for each major chord in the key without having to leave the diatonic framework. Great question. I hope this has been helpful to you and I’m looking forward to my next question in Ask Sheldon Anything.
